Kim and Tritton Halls were completed under Paul Schulhof’s leadership as a partner at Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects + Partners
Kim and Tritton Dormitories, located at the heart of Haverford College’s campus, provide housing for 160 students in two distinct buildings. As a Quaker institution, Haverford College places consensus-building at the core of its mission and philosophy.
The site for the Kim & Tritton Residences was built on landfill with unusable material that required extensive remediation. Instead of transporting the material off-site, it was repurposed to create a landscaped berm between the two rectangular, two-story buildings. This innovative approach resulted in a residential community where architecture and landscape are seamlessly integrated. The berm also provides direct access to the upper levels of the buildings, eliminating the need for fire stairs or elevators. This efficient solution not only saved space but also allowed for the creation of additional public spaces and enhanced interior finishes.
Inside the dormitories, rooms along the perimeter of each building are organized around common areas, departing from a conventional double-loaded corridor layout. Large sliding glass doors seamlessly connect interior and exterior spaces. Today, the project is cherished by the Haverford College community and is the preferred on-campus living choice.
