Mexico City
The design for the New Mexico Embassy was completed under Paul Schulhof’s leadership as a partner at Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects + Partners
The new U.S. Embassy in Mexico City is the first project launched under the Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations’ (OBO) “Excellence in Diplomatic Facilities Initiatives” program. This initiative aims to elevate standard embassy designs while ensuring projects are secure, technically advanced, and contextually grounded.
Inspired by Mexico’s centuries-old courtyard buildings, the design for the Mexico Embassy features a central, covered open-air courtyard that blends seamlessly with its environment while maintaining a secure outdoor space for events and collaboration.
The embassy’s design meets rigorous security standards while honoring the material culture and architectural traditions of Mexico City, celebrating the unique character of its surroundings and the intertwined histories of the American and Mexican people. Spanning one million square feet, the facility will house 39 government agencies and more than 1,700 staff members. It will also streamline services for hundreds of thousands of consular visitors each year.
